Description: Fifth edition, with considerable additions. 8vo., pp.viii, 660 + additional engraved title page and 15 further plates, 2 of which folding. Some light foxing, Thames plate with tattered edges, 'Part of London as it appeared in the Great Fire' plate trimmed too close at head edge with some loss and torn along its fold, with half detached and some other paper repairs to the verso. MS notes to final leaf and rear endpapers. Contemporary half green polished sheep, gilt title and rules to spine, marbled boards, edges sprinkled red. Joints worn with the upper just starting, edges worn and corners fraying with some loss of surface, endpapers toned, still a good sound copy. Ownership inscription of Michael J. Bellis pencilled to front pastedown, with small Foyles label.

The fifth edition of the traveller and writer Thomas Pennant's account of London. Pennant (1726-1798) began his writing career with zoological and other naturalist works, but after achieving success with an account of a tour of Scotland, turned to travel. He toured Wales, Scotland, several counties, and London, and published a number of works entitled 'A Tour of...' or 'A Journey from...'. This book takes the form of a tour of London, and was highly regarded by Boswell, among others.
