Author: Greenwood, James:

Title: Odd People in Odd Places; or, The Great Residuum.

Publication: London: Frederick Warne and Co., [1883].

Description: 8vo., pp.xii, 244. Very mildly toned. Half dark blue sheep, blue cloth boards, spine gilt with raised bands, marbled endpapers. Title page with previous owner's address label stuck to its centre, partially obscuring the subtitle, and a patch of toning from the newspaper clipping pasted in opposite. Endpapers etc with multiple newspaper clippings attached. Scuffed, joints and head-cap a bit worn, corners frayed, still a good sound copy. Recent ownership label of Mrs S. M. Plumridge of Portobello Road to title-page.

A collection of 'pen pictures', first published in the Daily Telegraph, of 'the lower grade of the great community' of London. James Greenwood (1832?1927) was an English social explorer, journalist and writer whose focus was the plight of London's working poor. He was one of the first journalists to research his stories by going undercover, and is regarded as a pioneer of investigative journalism. In this copy of his penultimate book the front and rear endpapers, the final page, and several blanks (15 'pages' in total) are covered in pasted-in newspaper clippings of interesting or amusing stories, mostly related to crime and court proceedings. Four are dated: 1898, 1909, 30th December 1897 and July 30th 1904, but most are dateless.
