Description: 4to., pp. [lxxiv], 966, [cxciv] + added engraved title-page and folding map. With prize certificate bound in. Title-page in red and black, woodcut initials and endpieces, some illustrations in the text. A few smudgy marks and the odd bit of foxing but generally very good inside. 1830s tree calf, gilt spine, tan morocco label, gilt borders, blue paste-patterned edges. Spine scuffed and quite dry, joints worn with the upper just starting at the head, edges rubbed, ties lost, rust mark from a paperclip to front endpapers, very good. To front pastedown, an apparently early 20th-century bookplate of Mr D. Bijendijk. School presentation certificate made out to D. Bijdendijk and dated 1830 bound before the added engraved title.

The classic variorum edition of Lucan's 'Pharsalia'. Oudendorp (1696-1761) was a student and professor at Leiden. He adds both the ancient scholia to the 1st century AD poet of the Roman Civil Wars, and the modern continuation of Lucan by the author Thomas May (1595-1650). According to Dibdin: 'A very excellent edition. It contains the ancient Scholia, the select notes of various ancient and modern editors, such as Omnibonus, Sulpitius, Micyllus, Bersmannus, Grotius, and others, with the editor's own remarks and annotations, in which he has explained the subject of his author in a concise and perspicuous manner. Between the text and the notes are excerpta from the various MSS. and editions which Oudendorp consulted.' Selected by Dibdin for his list of best 4to variorum classics.
