Description: 12 vols., 'A New Edition', 8vo.. First vol. with portrait frontispiece, vols. I and II each with a folding map. A little toned offsetting from the plates, very occasional light foxing but generally clean. Contemporary tan diced calf neatly rebacked, spines attractively gilt with titles, vol. numbers and dates, gilt borders, marbled edges, drab endpapers. Lightly rubbed, a little staining to boards, corners frayed but a very good, good-looking set. Armorial bookplate of William Jeffrey Lockett to front pastedown of each volume. The shield depicts the arms of Lockett and Johnson, implying this is William Jeffrey Lockett (1768-1839), whose mother Hannah was a Johnson. Lockett was a Derbyshire solicitor and Deputy Clerk of the Peace who was instrumental in organising the trial of the Luddite Pentrich Rebels in 1817.

Gibbon's (1737-1794) masterpiece, originally published 1776-1788. Volume I contains a 'Life of Edward Gibbon, Esq.' on pp.[3]-16, volume XII contains a general index on pp.[429]-508. Each volume has its own contents page. Printer statement to title-page verso: Plummer and Brewis, Printers, Love-Lane, Little Eastcheap.
