Description: 8vo., pp. xvi, 579 + 8 plates as called for including frontispiece with tissue guard and folding plan at rear. With half title, illustrations in the text. Half-title and frontis a little foxed, few short tears to the folding plan. Possibly homemade binding in very heavily grained leather, paper label to spine, marbled edges, front endpapers marbled, rear endpapers plain pink. Joints very slightly rubbed, scuff to bottom edge of lower board, tape to front hinge, an unconventionally-bound but very good copy.

Illustrated with nearly three hundred wood engravings, a large map, and a plan of the forum.
