Engraved frontispiece by Worthington after Leonardo's Last Supper, engraved title-page. Frontispiece and engraved title a little dusty, light age yellowing. Contemporary crushed navy blue morocco, boards and spine gilt, inner edges gilt. Spine sunned, joints and corners a little rubbed. Inscription 'The Hon.ble Francis H. Baring from Bart B. Dowling Feb 13 1878' to fly. From Pickering's famous 'Diamond Classics' series. Dedicated to George John, 2nd Earl Spencer (1758-1834), renowned bibliophile. 'The smallest Greek Testament ever published. Reuss places the text among Editiones Stephano-Elzevirian?, i.e. the class represented by Buck's edition of 1632 and similar Testaments.' (D&M). Drexel, Jeremias: Orbis Pha?thon hoc est de uniuersis vitiis lingu? pars prima (altera). Monachii [Munich]: Formis Cornelii Leysserii Electoralis Typographi, 1630. 24mo., pp. [xxx], 544, [ii]. Engraved title-page, illustrations in the text, final leaf blank. Occasional light offsetting from illustrations, a little light foxing, a few tiny ink spots, some closed tears neatly repaired, old tape marks to pp.185-6. Contemporary vellum, inked title to spine, blind-tooled boards. Vellum a bit greyed, edges of text block darkened, very good. To front paste-down, bookplate with blue printed border and indecipherable inscription. Part one (the second following in 1636) of this small-format dictionary of vices and sins, with engravings by Philippe Sadeler. Drexel's (1581-1638) works virtue, eternal truth and recognition of the divine were popular and much-read in his lifetime. Aware of the power of visual symbols to convey his teachings, it is not uncommon for his books to be heavily illustrated. First edition. 2 vols., 8vo., pp. xxiii, [i], 598; [ii], 627, [i] + errata slip at rear of each volume. A few illustrations in the text. A few patches of faint toning but generally good. Both volumes rebacked with raised bands: vol. I with a plain spine, green gilt title and vol. labels; vol. II with previous spine retained, gilt with brown title and vol. labels. Contemporary calf boards, plain gilt borders. Edges sprinkled red, drab endpapers. Rubbed, some scrapes, vol II hinges repaired and volume label chipped with some loss. Good, sound copies overall. Traces of a bookplate removed from front pastedown.
