Folio, pp. (preliminaries), 302, cviii + portrait frontispiece, 10 further portrait plates, 1 folding map, 1 folding plan, 4 genealogies, 11 other plates. Preliminaries erratically paginated, but consisting of half-title, title to 1817 edition, title to 1824 second edition, Dedication, Preface, List of Subscribers and Contents, as called for. Occasional smudgy marks but internally very good. Contemporary dark brown morocco, raised bands, gilt borders to spine compartments and boards, blind-tooled boards, gilt title to centre of upper board, a.e.g., marbled endpapers. Very light rubbing to joints, a few dusty marks, endpapers foxed but still very good indeed. To ffep verso, ownership inscription of J. Feilden, Mollington Hall. The Feildens were a family of Cheshire cotton merchants who occupied Mollington Hall, from 1796 to 1906. Twycross's Mansions of England and Wales (1850) depicts a grand country house with lakes, described as 'the seat of John Feilsen Esq.' With half-title and, at rear, three pages about Fabian Research Department Publications. Very faintly toned. Terracotta-coloured cloth, gilt title to spine and upper board. Spine a little darkened with a couple of tiny marks, endcaps creased and a bit rubbed, top edge dusty with a faint stain, very good. Author inscription to ffep, 'To H. Berger from Henry D. Harben'. Folio, pp. [vi], 636, [xx] + portrait frontispiece. Title-page in red and black, woodcut initials, final leaf blank. 4G with short closed tear to lower margin not affecting text, a few light spots and smudges. Contemporary brown calf, spine label replaced, raised bands, blind-tooled borders and frames. Head- and tail-caps repaired, rubbed, joints creased and a bit worn, corners repaired, some spots and stains but still very good. Ownership inscription of Ja. Winstanley in an old hand to top of title-page. Third edition (the first published in 1649) of this apologetic Life of Henry VIII by the soldier, statesman and Deist philosopher Edward Herbert (1572-1648), elder brother of the poet George Herbert.
