Occasional smudgy marks but internally very good. Contemporary dark brown morocco, raised bands, gilt borders to spine compartments and boards, blind-tooled boards, gilt title to centre of upper board, a.e.g., marbled endpapers. Very light rubbing to joints, a few dusty marks, endpapers foxed but still very good indeed. To ffep verso, ownership inscription of J. Feilden, Mollington Hall. The Feildens were a family of Cheshire cotton merchants who occupied Mollington Hall, from 1796 to 1906. Twycross's Mansions of England and Wales (1850) depicts a grand country house with lakes, described as 'the seat of John Feilsen Esq.' Full page illustration at h4. Gathering A accidentally repeated. A little foxed, some small patches of toning and light dusty marks, 2Q1 and 2Q2 a little short at fore-edge built not affecting text, Index a bit toned. Contemporary tan calf, raised bands gilt ruled, green morocco title labels, edges sprinkled red. Joints creased and just starting at ends, rubbed, corner frayed, vol.II with small losses to endcaps, endpapers foxed, very good overall. A reissue of the edition of 1771 with cancel title-pages. Originally published in 1720, one of a flurry of publications that came after Hearne's attempted prosecution by the University of Oxford over his preface to Camden's Annals which 'appeared to damage the University, and seemed to imply Catholic inclinations' (ONDB).
