Some light foxing, Thames plate with tattered edges, 'Part of London as it appeared in the Great Fire' plate trimmed too close at head edge with some loss and torn along its fold, with half detached and some other paper repairs to the verso. MS notes to final leaf and rear endpapers. Contemporary half green polished sheep, gilt title and rules to spine, marbled boards, edges sprinkled red. Joints worn with the upper just starting, edges worn and corners fraying with some loss of surface, endpapers toned, still a good sound copy. Ownership inscription of Michael J. Bellis pencilled to front pastedown, with small Foyles label. The fifth edition of the traveller and writer Thomas Pennant's account of London. Pennant (1726-1798) began his writing career with zoological and other naturalist works, but after achieving success with an account of a tour of Scotland, turned to travel. He toured Wales, Scotland, several counties, and London, and published a number of works entitled 'A Tour of...' or 'A Journey from...'. Engraved title-page with vignette of a house titled 'Bychon'. Separate title-page for Holywell, with vignette. First leaf and title foxed, some further light foxing, occasional toning generally to leaves near plates. Recently rebound, speckled tan half calf, red morocco gilt label, brown cloth boards, endpapers renewed. A few marks to cloth, very good. 'Two of the three publications written towards the end of Pennant's life exemplify both his energy and the range of his writings. The History of the Parishes of Whiteford and Holywell (1796) offers a detailed local history and genealogical information on the Pennant family. [?] The title of the third, The Literary Life of the Late Thomas Pennant Esq., by himself (1793), hints at Pennant's sense of humour. It is signed only by dotted lines to indicate the death of the author: it is for that reason that his History of the Parishes is signed 'RESURGAM', with its implication of literary resurrection.' Pencilled notes to preliminary blank. Bands a little rubbed, some light wear to lower board edges, very good indeed. Recent bookplate of Robert J. Hayhurst to front pastedown. Exuberantly extra illustrated with 35 bound-in plates (one of which appears to be a small painting), including frontispiece, in addition to the in-text engravings listed at the front. One further plate pasted onto the final page. Additional images include portraits, views, grand houses etc, plus a separate work, 'Profiles of Warrington Worthies' by James Kendrick, 1853, found just before the index. Cyrus Redding (1785-1870) was a journalist who had, in 1842, published the same text with How & Parsons as part of a large series, which included a similar work on Cornwall also written by Redding.
