Second Dannback printing of Virgil (the first being the 8vo. of 1785), with the recension of J. P. F. Brunck. Stylistically, the production takes its influence from the uncluttered large quartos of Baskerville, who is indeed praised in the publisher's preface. 'These editions are not only very beautiful specimens of typography, but they present the text of the poet complied with great care and correctness, in which the ancient orthography and true reading are endeavoured to be restored.' (Dibdin). Schweiger II, 1180; Dibdin II, 561-2. Ref: 54637

[Virgil] Vergilius Maro, Publius: (Heyne, C.G. (ed.:) Opera, varietate lectionis et perpetua adnotatione illustrata...accedit index uberrimus editio tertia emendatior et auctior. Minimal toning or offsetting from engravings, occasional light spotting, I: engraved frontispiece, title and first leaf somewhat foxed, III: slight spotting to a couple of gatherings,. Contemporary polished calf, marbled endpapers, double gilt ruled, blind-tooled decorative roll, raised bands, spine gilt and gilt-lettered, inner edges gilt, all edges marbled, joints, head and foot of spine a trifle rubbed with occasional very minor loss. Remarkably fresh and clean, uniformly bound set of this much celebrated, deluxe, student edition of Virgil, by C.G. Heyne. He issued four 'incomparable editions' (Dibdin), this being the London reprint of the Leipzig edition of 1788. In addition to the received Vergilian canon, it includes indexes and an incredibly thorough chronological list of all Virgil editions ever printed. This is probably one of the copies on large paper, in royal octavo, ornamented with beautiful vignettes, mentioned by Dibdin. Dibdin (4th ed.) II, p.559; Schweiger II, 1181. [Virgil] Vergilius Maro, Publius: (Hunter, John, ed.:) Opera: ad Lectiones Probatiores Diligenter Emendata, et Interpuctione Nova Saepius Illustrata [?]. Cupri Fifanorum [Cupar, Fife]: R. Tullis, Academiae Andreanae Typographus, Londini, apud Whyte et Fi (1810). 2 vols. 8vo., pp. xviii, 227, [i]; [ii], 253, [i]. A little light foxing, some slight dusty marks. Contemporary brown calf, attractive gilt spine, blind tooling to joints, marbled edges and endpapers. Endcaps and joints a bit worn, upper joint vol.I just starting, some stains and scuffs, corners frayed, still very good. To each front pastedown an armourial bookplate; to initial blank vol.I, 'E.I.H., 1821 May'. We believe this to be Edward Isaac Hobhouse (1804-1854), the bookplate showing Hobhouse arms impaling those of his wife, Hester Charlotte, whom he married in 1832. Edward was the half-brother of John Cam Hobhouse (1786-1869), the English Radical politician and great friend and travelling companion of Lord Byron. During John's extremely brief period as Chief Secretary for Ireland he appointed Edward as his private secretary. An interesting scrap of Edward's adolescence is preserved in the National Library of Scotland in the form of an 1819 letter from Henry Drury, master of Harrow School, to Edward's father Sir Benjamin Hobhouse about his unruly son (Item Reference: MS.42303). Drury complains about the boy's behaviour, in particular an incident of letting off fireworks in the house, and "a determined defiance of all authority". As a result, Drury recommends that Edward is removed from the school and given a private tutor, before he is inevitably "publicly expelled". A later edition by Robert Tullis of Dr John Hunter's much acclaimed text, which had first appeared in 1799. Tullis took inspiration from the Foulis Press and as such his editions were noted for the elegance of their typesetting. See Dibdin (4th edn.) II, 564 for the 1799 appearance of Hunter's edition. [Virgil] Virgilius Maro, Publius: Bucolica, Georgica, et Aeneis. Birminghamiae [Birmingham]: Joannis Baskerville, 1757. First edition. 4to, pp. [x], 103, [ii], 105-231, 233-432 (errors in pagination as usual). With initial blank and list of subscribers. Occasional extremely faint spotting but very clean overall. Contemporary tan speckled calf, spine gilt with raised bands and red morocco label, edges red. Joints split but boards holding firm, some crackling to spine, but sound. Headcaps worn and chipped, some scuffs and scrapes, corners worn, some evidence of a bookplate having been removed from the front pastedown, but still a good, sound copy. The position of the 'J' of 'Johannis' between the 'B' and 'I' of 'Birminghamiae' on the line above identifies this copy as a first edition in accordance with Gaskell, who defines it as 'Baskerville's first and perhaps his finest book', and cites Renouard's judgement of it as 'the most beautiful and the most sought-after of Baskerville's quarto classics'. Dibdin adds, "I have always considered this beautiful production as one of the most finished specimens of typography". ESTC T131451; Gaskell 'Baskerville', 1; Dibdin (4th edn.)
